Philip Doddridge was a highly esteemed English Congregational minister and religious writer in the early 18th century. One of his most famous works, The Life of Col. James Gardiner, recounts his intimate knowledge of a career military officer’s unusual, nearly instantaneous conversion from a life of hedonism to devout Christianity. Doddridge knew and corresponded with Col. Gardiner for fifteen years until his death at the Battle of Prestonpans in 1745. During their relationship, Doddridge was continually struck by how Gardiner lived his faith in every aspect of his life, whether as a husband, father, friend, or commander of a regiment of dragoons. The text includes Gardiner’s letters to Doddridge and excerpts from the colonel’s letters to others.
